In 2019, flexible screen technology became mature enough to come into commercial products. The pioneer of these developments is Samsung, it spent about ten years developing such displays and that is why it was able to launch the first such product on the market – Galaxy Fold. So the top of the list of 5 most interesting smartphones 2020 is Samsung Z Flip.

Design, dimensions, controls

When folded, the smartphone turns out to be very small, compact, it easily fits in a shirt pocket, and will not protrude in trousers either. Although in the folded state, the thickness of the apparatus is 17.3 mm, and in the open – 7.2 mm.

Z Flip is not about performance. This is about comfort, convenience, as well as to demonstrate a certain commitment to new technologies.

As the body materials used glass (Corning Gorilla Glass 6), there are three colors.

Memory, chipset, performance

The model comes out in only one variant of memory – 8/256 GB, while the latest developments of the company are not used here, as in the S20 family. This is the level of the flagships of 2019 and Fold, which partially indicates that the model was developed by the standards of Samsung for a long time. Most likely, the electronics were ready earlier than the mechanism and case.

Whether this phone is worth the price or not, but it looks very interesting.

Samsung is again on the list of most interesting smartphones 2020. The new Galaxy S20 series is as beautiful and attractive as ever. There are a lot of reasons. This is a new design, and new cameras, and new screens, and most importantly – the complete absence of competitors in the Android camp.

Well, where else will you go? Was Samsung, and now Xiaomi take it? Any Realme? Grandma’s Sony Style? Will you order LG via the Internet? Huawei without Google services, and for a lot of money will you dance around it with a tambourine? Not! Nowhere are you going to get away from this submarine! You can only run away on iOS. But there is even more unfreedom. Apple will quickly teach you the discipline of how to live and which applications to use.

In the new cameras, the emphasis is on a number of chips:

  • The ability to shoot in poor lighting conditions;
  • Moving objects, such as children and dogs;
  • Possibility of optical or digital zoom with high-quality pictures on the output.

Design, dimensions, controls

The tendencies that each successive flagship should be larger than the previous ones cannot be canceled – manufacturers have become hostages of their approach. Users love large devices, the larger the screen, the better – but the question is how the proportions of the device change. So, in the S20 Ultra, the screen is 6.9 inches, which is a record for a smartphone in an ordinary, monolithic case. But the height of the device became 166.9 mm, which is also a lot, it is elongated vertically.

Display

The diagonal of the screens are different – 6.2, 6.7 and 6.9 inches. But the maximum resolution for all is the same – QHD. This is Dynamic AMOLED, excellent color reproduction, maximum brightness is adjustable over a wide range, in FullHD + resolution, which is the default, the screen works at 120 Hz (240 Hz sensor). Scrolling becomes smoother, but battery consumption increases.

Memory, chipset, performance

To begin with, the base memory option for all devices was made 128 GB, abandoned the intermediate options for 256 GB and everywhere saved memory cards (up to 1 TB). It turns out that everyone can choose the amount of memory that he needs. Either 128 GB or 512 GB of internal memory. Memory Type UFS 3.x. This is a very fast memory, but it is important that for the first time in Samsung’s line-up, LPDDR5 RAM is used.

The speed of both the interface and third-party applications has grown significantly, everything opens instantly. The difference in the amount of RAM affects how many applications you can keep in memory without unloading or tabs in the browser. Everything works very fast and even faster.

These devices come to Exynos 990 (5G modem is implemented separately, not integrated into the chipset), the technological process is 7 nm.

Cameras

Most interest, of course, is the camera in Ultra, as this is Samsung’s new module with 108 megapixels. In terms of photography, this is the most powerful device, and that’s why. It uses the union of 10 pixels into one (9 + 1), which turns the point of 0.8 microns into 2.4 microns (uses the none-binning / re-mosaic algorithm). A shot of 108 megapixels turns into 12 megapixels, and its sharpness, contrast, details become very good. Samsung has done a great job to make the pictures sparkle with new colors. It is not enough just to take such a module, as it was done in Xiaomi, here the algorithms that the manufacturer possesses or does not possess are important.

The second iteration of the Asus gaming smartphone in the Republic of Gamers line continues the work of its predecessor, this time taking into account some points that did not fit into the first ROG Phone and pumped the device in accordance with the latest trends in the gaming mobile industry. One glance at the specifications is enough to understand the potential of the device, which can easily give odds to all competitors in the field of mobile games, a kind of muscle game and a demonstration of capabilities.

Design, dimensions, controls

The design language of the first generation has been preserved in the device: the back of the smartphone has not visually changed, the cooling system evaporation chamber is still highlighted, in the center, there is a logo with customizable full-fledged backlight operating in X-mode hardware acceleration mode. Of the changes on the back, it is worth noting the fingerprint scanner that moved under the screen and nice accents under the glass, playing in the light with colorful gradients, which, coupled with the mentioned logo, slightly dilutes the strict exterior.

Asus ROG Phone II

Display

According to subjective impressions, the calibration of the display by color temperature slightly goes into cold shades, the parameter is configured according to personal preferences in a separate menu item. The oleophobic coating is of high quality, there are no problems with finger sliding on the glass surface, Gorilla Glass 6 is used in front, and the third generation in the back.

Of course, the display is one of the cornerstones of a gaming smartphone, including ROG Phone II. Let’s go through the main characteristics of the display:

  • Update frequency. The smartphone has an AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a response time of 1 ms, which gives a very smooth, but at the same time a fast display.
  • There is an intermediate setting of 90 Hz, as well as the usual 60 Hz. Judging by the leaks, such a hertz of displays will be actively introduced into the flagship segment of this model year, there is information that the 120 Hz mode will be available in the Samsung Galaxy S20, POCO X2 (aka Redmi K30), and the next Nubia gaming smartphone is promised at all with a frequency at 144 Hz, Sharp even waved at 240 Hz. The race is on, it started Razer.
  • From the previous paragraph follows the refresh rate of the sensor layer, which is 240 Hz with a delay of only 49 milliseconds. Thanks to these parameters, teams are processed as quickly and clearly as possible, without delays and jerks that are critical in dynamic games. So the phrase “pawned and lost” is not quoted here as an argument.
  • Color rendering. In addition to speed, the display, according to the manufacturer, reproduces colors very accurately, covering up to 118% of the DCI-P3 space. Color distortions are minimal and not visible to the human eye (parameter ∆E> 1), colors have a ten-bit coding (HDR).
  • Brightness is declared in a run-up to 600 nits. For a gaming smartphone, this is an excellent indicator, however, it is worth remembering that there are brighter displays on the market (iPhone 11 Pro, Samsung S10 +). In combination with high contrast, a clear picture is obtained, in the sun you have to add brightness.

Memory, chipset, performance

At the time of the release of the text, not a single official smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 has appeared, the flow of which will very soon burst into international markets. So, you can safely call the Asus ROG Phone 2 the leader in performance, but with a slight caveat: it is only upon activation of hardware acceleration (X-mode), in which RAM is freed up and the system allocates resources so as to increase performance.

On the other hand, and why not, it is not in vain that this option is included in the software. A bunch of 12 GB of RAM format UFS 3.0 and the QC 855+ processor is not common, and even more so with such software, sharpened for accelerating games and increasing productivity.

This is a smartphone without Google services. But Huawei does not say that. If you imagine that you can do without Google Pay, cards, the Google store and everything else, then the Honor View 30Pro is a very interesting device. It is made on the latest version of the top Kirin chipset. It has 5G support, so when you go where similar networks are available, you can enjoy new technologies. And Kirin is a very economical processor.

The smartphone has an interesting main camera of 3 photo modules and a dual front camera. By the way, the main camera has optical stabilization for two photo modules! And the smartphone even has an infrared port, that is, it can be used as a remote control for the TV.

Motorola is trying out ideas using a stylus. On the market now there is only a Samsung Galaxy Note with a stylus. And this is very sad. If you like to work with the stylus, then you have no alternatives. Moto G Stylus is, in my opinion, such a test ball, to see how the market will perceive. The price is low so that the device is available to the widest possible audience. At the same Note, the price is not affordable, and 270 euros can be spent as an experiment.

The smartphone has a good camera, which, by the way, has an interesting feature. It allows you to shoot a video vertically, and then play it horizontally as if it was originally shot. It’s comfortable.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not spread too much about what the stylus can do. And apart from the inscription “Eggs”, which was drawn out with a clearly shaking hand, there is no information. Perhaps the company is hinting that it takes some courage to get to know new technologies.

Motorola Moto G Stylus

Conclusion

So the list of most interesting smartphones 2020 ends here. February is usually the fireworks of new smartphones and many announcements. Not so this year. Devices from Xiaomi and Sony left for the material for March. All devices from the selection either went on sale in February, or pre-order was opened on them. So far, the conclusion is very simple. Huawei is skidding without Google, the rest of the manufacturers are shaking off coronaviruses, and only Samsung is confidently stamping its devices.
